This specific kind of 'container' or category is what we call its **type**.

Every piece of data we use in Python has a "type". It helps the computer understand not just what the data is, but how to work with it.

Think of it this way: You wouldn’t pour milk into a paper bag because it's not the right container type for liquid. 

Similarly, in Python, each data type ensures that the data is stored and managed in the most suitable way. 

Many data types exists in Python, but for now the three main basic we'll explore are:

The computer figures it out for itself when you assign a value to the variable. So, if you have a variable `x`, and you assign it the value `10`, Python understands that `x` is an integer.

Later on, if you assign `x` the value `"hello"`, Python then understands that `x` is now a string. This automatic figuring out of the data type is one of the things that makes Python very friendly for beginners. Isn't that convenient?

Notice that the data returned from input() is always a string, regardless of what the user types. If you need a number, you'll have to convert it (something we'll touch upon in future lessons!).

## 2. Displaying Information with print() 📢

The `print()` function allows us to communicate information back to the user. 

This is something we've already used multiple time so you should hopefully start to get used to it by now ! However we've just seen it's most simple form, simple printing. 

The `print()`function has actually a lot more up his sleeve, but here we'll just look at a small substet of it's feature

&nbsp;

- **Simple printing** :

The one you should be used to by now !

`>>> print("Welcome to the world of Python!")`


&nbsp;

- **Printing Multiple Items** :

Separate items with commas to print them in sequence.

`>>> age = 25`  
`>>> print("I am", age, "years old.")`

Will output `I am 25 years old.`


&nbsp;

- **Customizing print() with separators** :

By default, items are separated with a space in `print()`. You can customize this using the `sep` argument.

`>>> print("Hello", "World", sep="-")`

Will output `Hello-World`

- **Customizing the End of Print Outputs** : 

By default, `print()` ends with a newline, which means the next `print()` will be on a new line. You can change this with the `end` argument:

`>>> print("This is on one line", end=". ")`  

Will output `This is on one line. `

> A new line in python is represented by a "backslash n", `\n`. So by default the end argument is set to `end="\n"`.    
Note that you can also place `\n` inside strings themselves ! For example try `print("Hello \n How are you today ?")` and observe the result !

## 3. Using Python Formatted Strings 🖋️

One of the powerful ways to customize outputs in Python is by using formatted strings, often abbreviated as "f-strings".

f-strings provide a concise and convenient way to embed expressions inside string literals. This is done by prefacing your strings by the letter f, and placing your variables inside of curly braces.

Syntax: `f"Your text here {your_variable_here}"`

&nbsp;
- **Example** :

`>>> name = "Alice"`  
`>>> print(f"Hello, {name}!")` 

Will output `Hello, Alice`

&nbsp;

- **You can even embed expressions directly** :

`>>> age = 30`  
`>>> print(f"In ten years, {name} will be {age + 10} years old.")`

Will output `In ten years, Alice will be 40 years old.`

## 4. Hands-on Exercise: Crafting a Comprehensive Print Statement 📝

1. Setup: Open your Python Shell.

2. Ask the User for Data using multiple input():   
Prompt the user for their name and store it in a variable `name`  
Ask the user for their age and store it in a variable `age`  
Inquire about their favorite programming language and store it in a variable `favlanguage`.

3. Craft a Comprehensive Output:  
Using a single print() function and an f-string, display a summary of the information collected:

Your goal: Craft a statement like: "Hello [name]! You are [age] years old and your favorite programming language is [language]."

Hint: Remember the f-string format: f"Your text here {your_variable_here}".

It’s a great tool to practice and validate our learning, but as we dive deeper, we need a more equipped environment to write, test, and debug our Python scripts.

### **Why an IDE?** 🤔
This is where Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) come into play. An IDE is like a Swiss Army knife for programmers, offering a range of tools and features to make coding more efficient and enjoyable. Features like syntax highlighting, code completion, and debugging tools make an IDE an invaluable asset for any developer.

While numerous IDEs are available, each with its unique features and strengths, we’ll be using **PyCharm Community Edition** in this course. It’s a popular, free, and open-source IDE specifically designed for Python. It offers a friendly interface and powerful features that will make our Python journey smoother. However, if you have experience with another IDE, feel free to use it! The core concepts we’ll be learning are universal, and all IDEs serve the same ultimate purpose: helping you code effectively.

## **Installing PyCharm Community Edition** 💻


Let’s get our hands dirty and install PyCharm!

&nbsp;

1. **Download**: Visit the [PyCharm download page](https://www.jetbrains.com/pycharm/download/) and download the **Community Edition**.
>Be sure to install the Community edition and not the profesional ! If you do, simply uninstall it and reinstall the correct one.

2. **Install**: Follow the installation instructions appropriate for your operating system. If you encounter any issues, check the [Installation Guide](https://www.jetbrains.com/help/pycharm/installation-guide.html) for help.

3. **Launch**: Once installed, open PyCharm, you should now see an interface with a "Welcome To Pycharm" and three buttons.

Perfect, now that PyCharm is on your machine we can create a new project for this course !

## **Creating Your First Project 🎉**

With PyCharm installed, let’s create our first project!

1. **New Project**: Click on “Create New Project” and name it `LearningPython`. The default location should be good to go.
2. **Untick**: "Create a main.py welcome script", as we'll create our first script ourselves
3. You should be able to leave everything untouched, once you did step 1 & 2 you can press the create button

Now once you've created your first project, the main PyCharm window will open and should look like this:

IDE's are full of features, and going trough all of them would need a complete course on it's own, as this is a 101 we'll not dive into PyCharm feature set and will only focus on the essential !

## **Creating Your First Script 📜**

Now that we have a project, let's make our first script inside it !

1. Right Click on your project name in the right side of the screen, select New, and then Python File

2. A Small box will then appear for you to type this new file name, let's go with `TestScript`, and then press Enter

3. Let's now write our very first script ! We'll write a very simple code to prompt the user for his name and then print it.

Now, all that remain is for us to test what we just made, ready ?

1. Locate the green play button situated at the top right of your application and press it !

2. This will open a new `Run` box at the bottom of your screen, this is where the magic will happen ! You can now see it has executed our first line of code `name = input("What is your name ? : ")` and is waiting for the user input !

Installing Your First IDE

### **Introduction**

Great job on setting up your IDE and running your first Python script! With your new coding environment ready, it's time to dive into more Python programming concepts.

 In this lesson, we'll explore **conditional statements**, a crucial component of programming that allows your code to make decisions.

&nbsp;

&nbsp;

## **1. The `if` Statement 🛑**

The `if` statement is the simplest form of conditional statement. It allows your code to execute a block of code only **if** a certain condition is `True`.

The syntax is relatively simple, start with `if` then state your condition, and finally end the line with `:`

```python
temperature = 75
if temperature > 70:
    print("It's a warm day!")
```


&nbsp;

In this example, if `temperature` is greater than 70 (`> 70`), the program will print "It's a warm day!". Remember the comparison operators we learned in the "Basic Operators" lesson? We use them here to form the condition!

&nbsp;

### **Indentation Matters!**

In Python, indentation is essential!

The indented block of code under the `if` statement is what gets executed if the condition is `True`. Be mindful of your spacing!

For examplel:
```python
temperature = 75
if temperature > 70:
    print("It's a warm day!")
print("Perfect to go for a walk!")
```
Here, the line `print("It's a warm day!")` is indented, meaning it will only get executed `if temperature > 70:`  

However, the line `print("Perfect to go for a walk!")` is not, thus will always get executed no matter of the above `if` statement !

## **2. Adding `elif` and `else` 🔄**

While the `if` statement is powerful, combining it with `elif` (short for "else if") and `else` gives your code the ability to handle multiple conditions and a default case.

Example:
```python
weather = "rainy"

if weather == "sunny":
    print("Wear sunglasses!")
elif weather == "rainy":
    print("Bring an umbrella!")
else:
    print("Dress normally!")
```

In this example, if `weather` is "sunny", it'll advise wearing sunglasses. If it's "rainy", it'll suggest bringing an umbrella. For any other weather, it'll advise dressing normally.

> While you can have as many `elif` statement after an `if`, you can only have one `else` statement, and always as the last one

&nbsp;

You can, of course, have multiple blocks of `if` statements in your code !

For example:
```python
weather = "rainy"
temperature = 23

if weather == "sunny":
    print("Wear sunglasses!")
elif weather == "rainy":
    print("Bring an umbrella!")
else:
    print("Dress normally!")

if temperature > 30:
    print("It should be hot today!")
else:
    print("Bring something to cover yourself!")
```

And you can, even, have conditional statements INSIDE your conditional statements

For example:
```python
weather = "rainy"
temperature = 17

if weather == "rainy":
    if temperature < 20:
        print("Bring an umbrella and cover yourself!")
    elif temperature >= 20:
        print("Bring an umbrella!")
    
```

## **3. Hands-on Exercise: Whole Number? 🔢**

Now it's your turn to practice! Write a simple script that: 

1. Ask the user for a number (1, 24, 23441, etc.) using the `int(input())` functions. (Copy the starting code bellow)
2. Then, based on the input, use conditional statements to determine if this number, when divided by 2, is still a whole number. 
3. Use the modulo operator `%` to determine if the number can be divided by two, remember that `%` gives you the remained of a division. You can go back to the "Basic Operators" lesson for a remainder.
4. If a number is divisble by 2, print "True!", and if not print "False!".
5. Test your newly written script in your IDE ! Use the values 2, 5 & 1234. They should respectively give you True, False and True.


```python
# Here’s a starting point for your script, we put our input() function inside of an int() in order for number to be an integer and not a string, don't worry too much about this
number = int(input("Input a whole number, and I'll tell you if it can be divided by 2 ! : "))

# Now, add your conditional statements here! (Hint, use an if and else)

```
